I went to Oman over Xmas last year. I don't really know Middle East -I was exhausted after a hard year and Ijust wanted a quiet holidays with a palm tree and a swimming pool. Unusual for me, because usually I go somewhere backpacking.

I found on-line this newly opened resort near Barka called Al Nahda. Since it was a newly open place, everything what could go wrong, went wrong but people were very friendly and helpful. I took several trips around the country to wadis and mountains- don't remember names though. I also went to Muscat a few times. My impression of Middle East was always that majority of the people are quite distant (as you say about Emirates) - that's why I was so surprised to find Omani so friendly. Where is your next step by the way? Do you know where you're moving after Emirates?

Janet;

thanks for your comment to my post.I know exactly what you mean about a cat and a plant being a commitment. And you are right about too committed people telling you what to do and spending their lives worrying about the colour of the table napkins. I think I'm just slowly choosing my own objects of commitment - and they don't necessary have to be the same as everybodyelses. Good luck on your travels

Oman is a great choice for a trip, Kasha. We have really enjoyed visiting Oman ourselves. We find that Omanis are actually more friendly than Emiratis as a general rule. Oman doesn't have the oil wealth, but the landscape is more interesting and beautiful. Also, Oman has a lot fewer foreign workers. It is just a little bit less surreal I guess.

Where did you visit in Oman? Did you get to Mussandam or Salalah or did you spend most of your time in Muscat? Just curious.

I spent my last Xmas in Oman and I was very impressed with that country - it's friendliness, peacefulness and order. I assume UAE are quite similar? That just shows that dictatorship doesn't have to be a completely bad thing - as long as the dictator shows some common sense. Looking forward to hearing more
